Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Asturias University Institute of Biotechnology. University of Oviedo (Spain).
MSc. Biological Sciences(1975). Biochemistry PhD(1980) Universidad de Oviedo (Spain).
Postdoctoral training (1980-82) at the Biochemistry Department of the University of Cambridge (UK) and the Institute for Animal Health (Compton, UK) (1985).

Research: I am interested in molecular biology approaches applied to the study of relevant animal and human pathogens, mainly parasites and viruses. The main projects of my laboratory a related to the identification, cloning and heterologous expression of genes from parasite and viral pathogens of medical and veterinary relevance. Among the parasites we have studied Fasciola hepaticaHipoderma lineatum and Sarcoptes scabiei. In my early projects as an independent researcher I have investigated the porcine coronavirus Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV). Since 1990 my laboratory has performed research in caliciviruses, both animal (RHDV and RaV) and human (NV). More recently we are working as well in mixoma virus from rabbits (MYXV) and the recently described haMYXV in Iberian hare.  A relevant attention is also given to antiviral studies using human herpes virus (HSV1 and 2), calicivirus and human coronoavirus. We aim to understand the elements involved in their replication for the rational design of new improved antiviral strategies, diagnostics and vaccines.
